Suite Spain’s critically-acclaimed production of Bizet’s CARMEN counterposes the classic tale of forbidden love, jealousy and mortality against the story of two dance companies (The Classic Ballet of St. Petersburg and Suite Spain) working towards the Premiere of a full-length CARMEN Ballet, intermingling Ballet and Flamenco.
The proposal to mount a co-production befween Russian Ballet dancers and Spanish Flamenco dancers presents an exciting challege, not unlike the clashes and rewards present between cultures in CARMEN. There is great mutual respect and admiration between the Russian and Spanish dancers as they undertake the arduous rehearsals required for this groundbreaking production.
During the rehearsals the mutual attraction between the Principal Dancers (Rosario Castro Romero as Carmen and Farukh Ruzimatov as Don Jose) intermingles with the passion felt by their characters, mirroring many similar feelings.
Micaela, danced by Julia Makhalina (Farukh’s best friend) feels much of the same frustration as her character as his attentions turn increasingly towards Rosario, and Ricardo Castro’s Escamillo close relationship with his sister awakens jealousy in Farukh.
The presence of Death (Jose Romero) throughout the play, foreshadows the fatal outcome in which Carmen chooses freedom before love, falling into the arms of Death rather than be controlled by the posessive love of Don Jose.
CARMEN recasts the tragic classic tale in a way that illluminates it’s many iconic themes while raising new questions about the distance between artist and character, story and truth.
Plato considered “essence” as an eternal and immutable form of material and sentient things, with a metaphysical, realistic and transcendent sense ..
Esencia Flamenca, “Flamenco Essence”, is an awakening of the senses from within and those around us. Countries we have visited, different cultures we have met, all with whom we have shared and exchanged... Experiences leave indelible marks to shape who we are today and what we convey to the world.
Quintessence, paramount element of nature. As sculptors with each experience life carves and sculpts in a continuous process and endless.
... Beauty is already in the stone, ... we only discovered from our eyes.
From Granada, Andalucía, reaching a state of purity deep in our soul where everything else fades.
Following our own path to reach higher dreams.
Entering a dimension of the here and now so intense that every second seems an eternity - our flaming bodies becoming the secret essence of flamenco.
One sister, two brothers, three lives and flamenco.
To bring forth feelings that are pure, naked, and free of pretension. Not the true feelings of the artist; those feelings are humble and unimpressive in the eyes of the world. Instead, to call forth feelings from deep within, from the heart of the soul;
To convey the intimacy of Flamenco, an interior world unlimited by laws, where we do what we believe, where we express who we are regardless of who the world expects us to be, where we are able to listen to our inner voice and follow it;
To reveal the gifts of Flamenco, from the depths of the soul to the farthest reaches, from the feet on the ground to the hands reaching for the sky, and from the heart to the depths of Flamenco:
That is FLAMENCO AL DESNUDO.
